Intro
And so, on my second post, I’m going to attempt a directory of Modern Visual Culture (I will refer to it as anime/manga, like how deviantART categorizes media of said art style) style media, with links to resources of said area. Note: This is quite lengthy.
As this is still a work in progress, a lot of sections will have to be edited a lot of links will have to be edited.
First Tier
This would encompass the original media, the actual content.
Graphic— Manga(漫画)
Frames of pictures with text bubbles, made to tell a story. Err… comics. You should at least know this. Usually, you read from right to left, top to bottom, right page to the left page.
Phone–book Size Magazines(電話帳)
Tankoubon(単行本/コミック)
Film— Anime(アニメション/アニメ)
Interactive— Visual Novels(ビシュアルノベル)
Eroge(エロチックゲーム/エロゲ)
A subset of visual novels, and what visual novels came from.
Textual— Light Novels(ライトノベル/ラノベ)
Second Tier
This would encompass derivative works; consumers’ responses to content of the first tier or promotion materials.
Pin–up— Posters(ピンナップポスター)
Plastic— Figurines(フィギュア)
Fan— Doujin Works(同人/同人誌)
Doujin, which generally means community in Japanese, holds a second meaning when used in the Anime/Manga context. When used as such, Doujin refers to amateur works by a group of fans, some of which are not dissimilar to your average fanfiction, but taking on a larger variety of media(remixed soundtracks, posters, manga, art books, and… just use your imagination.). Such derivative works are often produced in very limited amounts to prevent being sued.
However, doujin can also be original productions.
Doodle— Oekaki(お絵描き)
Actually, this should be in say, tier 2.5 . Oekaki is a system where people ’scribble’ onto a Java applet and post them onto an image board.
Third Tier
This would encompass mainly net content that makes easier discussions between anime/manga communities, access to original anime/manga content and art and media that are spawned form such assistance. They may not fall under the category of anime/manga, but without them, the anime/manga scene will be very dull indeed.
Blogs
Manga Cafe(漫画喫茶)
Imageboards
Futaba Channel(ふたば(双葉)☆ちゃんえる)
Moeboard
Forums
2channel(2ちゃん)
Don’t ask why this is here, blame Monaa. Yes I know this is random. Omae mo naa! Anyways, I believe that a lot of recent animes’ randomness are spawned/inspired by 2channel. Mascots include:
- Monaa(モナー)
- Giko Cat(ギコ猫)
- Shii-chan(しぃちゃん)
- And a whole lot of variations.
Miscellaneous
Well, miscellaneous.
Vocabulary— Lingo
Terms have been coined for exclusive use in the anime/manga scene, whch may take on different meanings out of context. Terms that represent a major media will not be stated here, as they already have a category above.
